Professor Sentenced for Criticizing Government
From Times Wire Reports
A literature professor was sentenced to 19 months in prison for using the Internet to criticize government policies. The court ordered Tran Khue’s immediate release, however, because of time spent in jail since his arrest in December 2002.
The 68-year-old professor criticized Vietnam’s 1999 border pact with China, its northern neighbor.
Another dissident, retired army Col. Pham Que Duong, who also used the Internet to criticize government policies, is to go on trial in Hanoi this month.
