A Chance to Put Up a Five Spot
Those who don’t get enough of pick threes, pick fours and pick sixes will have another option today at Calder. As part of its annual $1.75-million Summit of Speed, the Miami track will offer an all-stakes pick five.
It will begin with the $100,000 Calder Turf Sprint Handicap at five furlongs, then continue with the $300,000 Azalea Breeders’ Cup Stakes at six furlongs, the $300,000 Carry Back Stakes at six furlongs, the $500,000 Smile Sprint at six furlongs and the $500,000 Princess Rooney at six furlongs.
Bear Fan, who has become arguably the finest female sprinter in the country for co-owner and trainer Wesley Ward, will seek her fifth win in a row in the Princess Rooney.
Among 13 entered in the Smile is California shipper Hombre Rapido.

The Grade II at seven furlongs is the first leg of a pick six with a guaranteed pool of $1 million. Other contenders in a field of nine include Fencelineneighbor, Royally Chosen and Coconut Girl.
