Maria Shriver to Attend Democratic Convention
SAN FRANCISCO — Maria Shriver, the Democratic wife of Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, will return to her roots later this month when she attends the Democratic National Convention in Boston.
Spokeswoman Terri Carbaugh said Shriver, a member of the Kennedy family, plans a low-key visit primarily to attend family gatherings and watch her uncle, Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, deliver a prime-time speech to delegates on the second night of the convention.
“She is going back for family-related activities, ceremonies that honor the legacies of her family members,” Carbaugh said.
On the first day of the convention, July 26, Shriver will participate in a dedication of the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a downtown park named for her grandmother, the Kennedy family matriarch. Sen. Kennedy will address the delegates July 27, and Shriver will attend the speech and a gala tribute to Kennedy later in the evening.
Carbaugh said Schwarzenegger, who is scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention in August, is unconcerned that his wife will appear with the Democrats.
“Most certainly there would be no trepidation about attending a family event,” Carbaugh said.
“Families don’t break on partisan lines. The governor is very supportive of Maria and her extended family. Family is about strong bonds of love.”
