Injured Hamstring Keeps Capriati Out of Carson
Jennifer Capriati, a French Open semifinalist and Wimbledon quarterfinalist this year, withdrew Thursday from next week’s JPMorgan Chase Open.
Capriati, the third player to withdraw from the tournament in the last five days, cited a hamstring injury. She is No. 7 in the WTA tour rankings and probably would have been one of the top five seeded players in the event, scheduled to run Monday through July 25 at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
“I’m sorry that I won’t be able to play the JPMorgan Chase Open. I really love that tournament, but I’m just not ready to play because of my hamstring,” Capriati said in a statement. “I’m going to continue to work hard and get ready to play again. I’m really looking forward to competing this summer, especially in the Olympics and the U.S. Open.”
Jelena Dokic, a 2000 Wimbledon semifinalist who is ranked No. 26, also pulled out, citing exhaustion and the need to rest, according to Bill Peterson, the Carson tournament director.
Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova pulled out Monday for the same reasons as Dokic.
Still in the tournament draw are Wimbledon runner-up Serena Williams and her sister, Venus Williams, as well as top-10 players Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
