Proposed Makes Debut in Del Mar Twilight
Proposed, a full sister to 2004 Santa Anita Oaks winner Silent Sighs, will make her debut in today’s $125,000 CTBA Stakes at Del Mar. The race is part of a twilight card that begins at 4 p.m.
Owned and bred by Marty and Pam Wygod and trained by Julio Canani, the 2-year-old Benchmark filly has trained exceptionally well for her first start and isn’t meeting a star-studded field of California breds.
Canani, who won a division of the Oceanside Stakes on opening day with the French import Blackdoun, doesn’t win often with first-time starters, but Proposed has impressed jockey David Flores.
Her work tab, which includes four works at San Luis Rey Downs before she shipped to Hollywood Park this spring, is solid and she blew out in 35 2/5 in her lone Del Mar drill Tuesday.
With the scratch of Kelly’s Princess, Proposed will have to beat six rivals -- Miss January, Burning Affair, Western Blondy, Swiss Please, Sterling Cat and Artabegood.
Of the remaining half a dozen, only Swiss Please is entering the CTBA off a loss. She was sixth of 11 in the Landaluce on July 5 at Hollywood Park and has dropped three in a row since winning her debut on April 28.
Race of the day: Spotlight, a two-time winner in England for trainer John Dunlop, will make her U.S. debut for trainer Christophe Clement in today’s eighth at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old Dr Fong filly will be ridden by Jerry Bailey in the $48,000 allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.
One for the road: Daylights End is a debuting daughter of Precise End who has trained as if she can win at first asking for trainer Stan Hough in today’s fourth at Belmont Park. Fernando Jara will ride the 2-year-old in the $41,000 maiden affair for New York breds at five furlongs.
Exotically speaking: A pick four using Coronado’s Pride and Smuggler’s Run in the fifth, Cyber Slew, Pocketfullofpesos and Wild Storm in the sixth, Proposed in the seventh and Direct Male, Expresso Bay, Domingo Juan and Magic Horn in the eighth.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 3/4. Money: Previous day/meet total: $13.60/$19.60. Total money bet: $34.
