Separation of Church and L.A. County Seal
Re “Protesters Rally for County Seal Cross,” June 9: I’d like to extend my admiration and support to the majority on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for standing by their decision to remove the Christian cross from the county seal.
Their opponents claim that it’s about history, but that wasn’t a mob of historians praying and singing hymns outside the board chambers, and those weren’t history textbooks they were waving, but Bibles. Their very behavior provides ample evidence that for them, just as for the American Civil Liberties Union and those of us who support it, it’s about state endorsement of religion, which the Constitution forbids.
And all the pressure that the Christian community can bring to bear on the Board of Supervisors won’t change that.
