High Court to Review State Suit Against Tribe
The California Supreme Court agreed Wednesday to review a lower court decision that permitted the state to sue an Indian tribe to enforce political disclosure laws.
The state high court, meeting in a closed session, unanimously decided to examine an appeals court ruling that allowed California to sue the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians for missing deadlines for reporting campaign donations and other requirements of campaign law.
The tribe, which has spent $14 million on state campaigns in recent years, maintains that its status as a sovereign government exempts it from campaign laws. A decision could take a year or longer.
