Guerin Completes Stars’ Comeback
The Dallas Stars needed a wild comeback to maintain their dominance over the Edmonton Oilers.
Bill Guerin scored his second goal of the game 55 seconds into overtime and the Stars rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat the Oilers, 5-4, Sunday at Dallas.
The Oilers are 1-17-2-1 in Dallas since the Stars moved from Minnesota before the 1993-94 season. Edmonton’s last regular-season victory in Texas was on Jan. 17, 1996.
“The Dallas Stars are not liked in Edmonton and for good reason,” said Guerin, a former Oiler player.
The Stars extended their home-unbeaten streak to 11 games (7-0-4) by storming back from a 4-1 hole they fell into late in the second period.
Guerin pushed the Stars’ home unbeaten streak against the Oilers to 16 games (15-0-1) when he scored his 27th goal of the season with a one-timer from the right circle off a pass from behind the net from Pierre Turgeon.
“Turgeon has been great behind the net his whole career,” Guerin said. “He tells guys to get open and he’ll find you and that’s exactly what happened.”
Trailing 4-1, Brenden Morrow scored a power-play goal late in the second period, Philippe Boucher made it a one-goal game with 18:34 left, and Teppo Numminen drew the Stars even at 4-4 with 15:08 left in regulation.
“We didn’t have composure, we started to panic with the puck,” Oiler Coach Craig MacTavish said.
San Jose 1, St. Louis 0 -- Evgeni Nabokov made 24 saves in his eighth shutout of the season, and Jonathan Cheechoo scored early in the third period to lead the Sharks at San Jose.
Nabokov earned the 25th shutout of his career and San Jose won for the fifth time in six games, staying six points ahead of Dallas in the Pacific Division.
Detroit 4, Philadelphia 2 -- Robert Lang had three assists in his Red Wing debut in a victory at Detroit. Lang, a former King acquired Friday from Washington, moved past Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis into the lead in the NHL scoring race with 77 points.
Calgary 4, Phoenix 2 -- Jordan Leopold had a goal and an assist and Chuck Kobasew scored the clincher to lead the Flames over the Coyotes at Calgary, Canada.
Robyn Regehr and Jarome Iginla also scored for Calgary, which moved into a tie on points with the Kings but holds the tiebreaker for seventh in the Western Conference because of more victories.
Carolina 3, Minnesota 3 -- Ron Francis scored with 4:15 left in regulation and the visiting Hurricanes tied the Wild at St. Paul, Minn.
Marian Gaborik gave the Wild a 3-2 lead at 12:09 of the third, and Andrei Zyuzin scored twice for Minnesota, as two of the NHL’s three lowest-scoring teams combined for four third-period goals.
Atlanta 3, New York Rangers 2 -- Ilya Kovalchuk bounced back from a one-game benching to score his NHL-leading 34th and 35th goals, and the Thrashers held off the Rangers at Atlanta.
Patrik Stefan had a short-handed goal, and Daniel Tjarnqvist had two assists for the Thrashers, who won for the fifth time in eight games.
Florida 2, Chicago 2 -- Valeri Bure’s power-play goal with 7:16 left in the third period lifted the visiting Panthers into a tie with the Blackhawks.
Niklas Hagman also scored for the Panthers, who have lost only once in seven games (3-1-3). Florida’s Roberto Luongo made 43 saves.
Pittsburgh 3, New York Islanders 2 -- Ryan Malone scored 2:45 into overtime to lift the Penguins over the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.
The Penguins earned their second overtime victory in three games.
