One that nearly got away
Saving a fish hatchery from the fryer, the state Department of Fish and Game on Friday announced plans to keep a Mono County trout factory open despite budget cuts.
The Hot Creek Hatchery produces most of the eggs for other hatcheries as well as 250,000 pounds of trout annually for many popular eastern Sierra fishing holes.
The hatchery lost four of its staffers, and its budget was pared by half to $360,000.
Tim Alpers of the Hot Creek Hatchery Foundation is optimistic that additional funds will be forthcoming from the sportfishing industry, grants and private donations.
He said there were plans for a visitor center, student programs and fishing opportunities for people with disabilities.
Fish and Game will continue to own and staff the hatchery.
Fish and Game hatchery supervisor Mike Haynie said he anticipated a stocking schedule similar to previous seasons.
Trout season opens April 24.
