* German automaker Volkswagen warned that sluggish auto markets would lead to “miserable” earnings in the current quarter and announced a cost-cutting program to eliminate 5,000 jobs.

* Japan’s economy grew at a revised 6.4% annual pace in the fourth quarter, less than the 7% initially estimated, officials said. Gross domestic product grew 1.6% in the fourth quarter in real terms, compared with the 1.7% growth estimated last month.

* Amgen Inc. said Leonard D. Schaeffer was appointed to the board of the Thousand Oaks-based biotechnology company. Schaeffer is chairman and chief executive of WellPoint Health Networks Inc.

* Rubio’s Restaurants Inc. said its fourth-quarter profit more than doubled to $354,000, or 4 cents a share. Sales rose 8% to $30.4 million.

* A San Francisco man agreed to pay $25,000 to settle claims that he posted a fake Reuters story on the Web with negative news about Sina Corp., China’s largest Internet company, to help him cover an investment, the Securities and Exchange Commission said.
