A Fullerton man, his girlfriend and their 1-year-old child were in serious condition Wednesday after what authorities said was a murder-suicide attempt the previous night.

Police said Jose Armas, 23, stabbed his live-in girlfriend, Odulia Aguilar, 20, three times in the chest with a butcher knife after she arrived home at the Briarhill Apartments in the 100 block of Hill Street with the infant Tuesday evening.

He stabbed the baby once, then turned the knife on himself, police said.

Armas and the baby were hospitalized at UCI Medical Center in Orange, where their conditions improved from critical to serious overnight.

Aguilar was being treated at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

Police said Armas, who has no criminal history, suspected his girlfriend of having an affair, though investigators knew of no evidence to support the suspicion. “There was an increasing issue of his jealousy when she talked to neighbors or males at work,” said Fullerton Police Lt. Danny Becerra.
