The Light Inside of Me

By Jacquelyn, 10

Roy G. Decker Elementary

Pomona

There is a light inside of me,

A light that burns so bright.

This light keeps my hopes and dreams,

It burns both day and night.

I keep it hidden deep inside,

So no one can blow it out.

I tend the flame carefully,

It’s what I’m all about.

When someone puts me down,

I just look inside for my light,

You get it when you’re small.

Too bad, some people blow them out,

Some kids have none at all.

Your parents help tend it carefully,

Your teachers help you, too.

Your friends, coaches and family,

But it all begins with you.

I feed my flame with knowledge,

From teachers, life and books.

You have to feed it every day,

Sometimes, it’s harder than it looks.

So listen to your teachers,

They teach you all you need to know.

Take their knowledge, pay attention

And study hard,

So you can grow and grow.

There are lights inside of both

Me and you,

So keep them safe and sound.

If we all work together,

There’s enough light to go around.
