John H. Lundberg, 97; Steelworker on N.Y.’s Empire State Building
John “Jack” H. Lundberg, believed to be one of the last surviving steelworkers who built the Empire State Building, died Wednesday, according to the Watertown (Wis.) Daily Times. He was 97.
The building, at 102 stories, was completed in 1931 and for years stood as the world’s tallest skyscraper.
Lundberg also worked on the Chrysler Building and Rockefeller Center in New York and the John Hancock Tower in Boston.
The Discovery Channel and the BBC both interviewed him for documentaries about working on the buildings. He was a member of Ironworkers Local 371 of New York.
