Poly Relay Team Sets National Mark Again

Long Beach Poly broke its national indoor record in the girls’ 1,600-meter relay Sunday in the National Scholastic Indoor championships at the New York Armory in New York City.

Seniors Shalonda Solomon, Dashanta Harris and Jasmine Lee and sophomore Shana Woods timed 3 minutes 38.91 seconds to smash the previous best of 3:41.54 that Poly set in the meet last year in New York.

Solomon, a triple gold-medalist in the Pam American Junior championships last summer, also won the 200 in 23.44 and finished third in the 60 in 7.51 on the final day of the three-day meet.

Harris won the 60 high hurdles in 8.61 on Sunday after Woods won the pentathlon with a national-sophomore record of 3,846 points.

Girls’ Swimming

Courtney Cashion, who has won Division I titles in the 50-yard freestyle the last two seasons and has won the 100-yard freestyle event the last three years, has been academically ineligible since the season began.

Irvine Coach Scott Hinman said Cashion has been working to improve her grades, and he expects her to be able to return to the team in April.
