The Gift of Life

For many years I was a regular blood donor, until coming down with leukemia prevented me from continuing to give. As part of my treatment I have required two blood transfusions in the last two months. Each time, I noticed the words “volunteer donor” on the plastic bag containing the life-sustaining fluid.

Because I will never personally know the generous people who gave of themselves to help save my life, I have no other way to express my appreciation to you than through this letter. I extend to you my deepest thanks for your generosity. According to Jewish tradition, one of the highest forms of charity is voluntarily giving to an unknown recipient. You have truly performed a high act of giving.
