A voice that taught, soothed

It’s difficult to believe that golden, hip, soothing voice has been silenced (“Chuck Niles, 76; Voice of L.A.’s Jazz Radio,” by Mitchell Landsberg, March 17).

Chuck Niles likely turned on as many people to jazz as did the legendary soloists, groups and vocalists whose music he always presented with reverence, joy and affection over two generations. There were countless broadcasts when he painted the mood for treasured listening experiences. What a set of pipes! He and the late, great Frank Evans were my jazz shepherds, guiding me on the path of understanding and appreciation of our lone great original American art form.
