Pepperdine Women Lose
Andrea Lalum had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Giuliana Mendiola had 20 points to lead Washington to a 71-59 victory over Pepperdine in the first round of the women’s NIT at Seattle on Friday night.
The Huskies (18-12) were five of nine from three-point range, 10 of 11 from the free-throw line and led at halftime, 39-22. They led by as many as 19 in the second half. The Waves (17-13) missed their first seven shots and had 10 turnovers in the first half.
Nicole Funn led Pepperdine with 14 points. Shandrika Lee, after being held scoreless in the first half, had 11.
Washington will play host to Creighton Sunday in the second round. The Blue Jays advanced with a 79-68 victory over Colorado State at Boulder, Colo.

NAIA DIVISION I WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT
Top-seeded Vanguard advanced to the quarterfinals at Jackson, Tenn., with an 82-64 victory over Oklahoma Christian (20-15). Lisa Faulkner scored 22 points to lead the Warriors (31-20), who play Brescia, Ky. Jennifer Flener made two free throws with 11 second left to give the Bearcats (29-5) a 43-42 victory over Westmont (19-12).... Point Loma Nazarene (23-13) was beaten, 73-56, by Southern Nazarene, Okla. (33-3).

Lamar Butler made a tiebreaking three-point basket with 1:24 left at Fairfax, Va., to give George Mason a 66-60 victory over Austin Peay (22-10) in the first round. The Patriots (23-9) will play Oregon (16-12) at Eugene Tuesday night in the second round....D’or Fischer blocked nine shots to set a school record and lead West Virginia (17-10) to a 79-72 victory over Rhode Island (20-14) in a first-round game at Morgantown, W.Va....Nebraska (18-12) advanced with a 77-70 victory over Niagara (22-10) at Lincoln, Neb. The Cornhuskers held Tremmell Darden, who had 26 points in the Purple Eagles’ win over Troy State on Tuesday, to 11.
