U.S. State Department Official Meets Kadafi
From Times Wire Reports
Assistant Secretary of State William J. Burns, the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Libya in more than 30 years, talked with Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi in Tripoli. Official sources said Burns handed Kadafi a letter from President Bush about ways to improve the two countries’ ties -- long frigid but much improved since Libya’s decision in December to give up banned weapons programs.
Listed by the U.S. as a sponsor of terrorism, Libya is blamed for attacks such as the 1988 bombing of a U.S. airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland.
