Maybe Jack Stays on Track

Maybe Jack has to be admired.

An 11-year-old gelded son of Classic Account, the Georgia-bred is still winning his share of races and could pick up another victory in today’s seventh, a $10,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles, at Gulfstream Park.

Now owned and trained by Ed Broome, Maybe Jack has won 34 of 115 starts and has been second or third on another 31 occasions.

Five of those victories have come at Gulfstream, and he has been worse than third only once in 15 starts at the Florida track.

A winner of four of 10 in 2003, Maybe Jack, who was re-claimed by Broome for $14,000 a little over a year ago, has shown no signs of slowing down this year. He has a win and two seconds in three races since Gulfstream opened Jan. 3. Joe Bravo, who has been his rider in each of those outings, has the mount again today in the field of nine.

A race later, another old pro will take the track when Petrina Above, a 9-year-old Great Above mare, aims for her 11th lifetime victory against seven others in a $46,000 allowance at about five furlongs on the turf. She’s trained by Frank Carlisi for owner Al Luccarelli.

Race of the day: Surprized, who has won two in a row after an extended losing streak, will try for another victory in his first for trainer Jeff Mullins after being claimed for $40,000 on Feb. 21 at Golden Gate Fields. The 5-year-old Prized gelding is among 10 scheduled to go 1 1/16 miles in the $52,000 optional claimer for California-breds at Santa Anita.

One for the road: Riley Style is a debuting 2-year-old son of Individual Style, who was very quick, and he can win for trainer Wesley Ward in today’s fourth, a $24,000 maiden affair at two furlongs, at Golden Gate Fields. It’s the first 2-year-old race of the year in Northern California.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Doux Slew and Jake Skate in the first, She Roves in the second and O Nectar, Princess B and Famous Woman in the third.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/192. Money: Previous day/meet total: $3.80/$1,011. Total money bet: $1,132.
