Supervisor Won’t Seek Reelection
SAN FRANCISCO
Supervisor Matt Gonzalez, who lost his run for mayor against Gavin Newsom last year, will not seek reelection to his seat.
Gonzalez is planning to turn his attention to practicing law privately, legislative aide Amy Laitinen said Monday.
“It certainly took us aback and stole our political breath,” said activist Richard Marquez, who worked as a field coordinator on Gonzalez’s campaign. “It’s highly unorthodox and unusual for a politician to step out at the apex of his career.”
But Eric Jaye, a political consultant who was a campaign strategist for Newsom, said he wouldn’t be surprised if Gonzalez took another crack at running for mayor.
