Senior Terrail Lambert of Ventura St. Bonaventure won the boys’ 100 and 200 meters with a pair of career bests and anchored the Seraphs’ 400 relay team to a third-place finish in the Ventura County track and field championships at Moorpark High on Friday.

Lambert, who is headed to Notre Dame on a football scholarship as a defensive back, clocked 10.77 seconds in the 100 and 21.71 in the 200 to beat the 10.84 and 21.77 times of Moorpark senior Allen Lindsay.

Lindsay, who won the seeded race of the 400 in 48.19 in the Arcadia Invitational on April 10, was gaining on Lambert in the final 50 meters of the 200 but could not catch him.

Josh Jackson took advantage of his second opportunity and cashed in with a go-ahead run-scoring single in the eighth to lead visiting Aliso Viejo Aliso Niguel to a 3-2 victory over No. 5 Santa Ana Foothill in a Sea View League game.

Jackson was earlier removed from the game after getting upset with himself after striking out for the second time, Aliso Niguel Coach Sommer McCartney said.

But his replacement at first base, Justin Kuehn, pulled a muscle in his leg and Jackson was called on to pinch-hit. Aliso Niguel (13-8-1, 8-3), which played three one-run games against the Knights (19-3, 9-2) this season, winning two, reached extra innings after right-fielder David Gurbach threw a runner out at the plate for the second out in the bottom of the seventh.

Foothill’s best player, pitcher-first-baseman Phil Hughes, who pulled a muscle in his leg last week, was limited to pinch-hitting duties Friday.

“We dodged a bullet a little bit,” McCartney said.

Fourth-ranked Cerritos (20-2, 11-1) won its 13th Suburban League title in 15 years by virtue of a tiebreaker when No. 10 La Mirada (19-2, 11-1) upset the defending champion Dons, 186-195, at Candlewood Country Club in Whittier on Thursday. Senior Ricky Costello of La Mirada shot a one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors, while teammates Daniel Im and freshman Sihwan Kim each shot 35.

The teams split their league matches, but Cerritos won the March 24 meeting at Lakewood Country Club by 12 strokes for a three-stroke aggregate victory. La Mirada last won titles in 2000 and 2001, winning the latter title on total strokes after the teams split league matches.

The Dons’ title was a nice gift for Coach Dennis McReynolds, who will be retiring from teaching this spring after 31 years. His future as a coach remains uncertain.

“I know I’m done from public education,” McReynolds said. “But I’m not sure yet about golf. But this is a great group of kids. If every team I had would be like this one. I would probably coach forever.”

Both La Mirada and Cerritos will tee off in the first round of the three-day Suburban League tournament at Los Amigos Golf Course on Monday. The second round will take place Tuesday at Lakewood Country Club, with the third round scheduled for Thursday at a site to be determined. The top five finishers advance to the regional finals May 17.

Both schools, along with third-place finisher Lakewood Mayfair, qualified to compete in the highly competitive Central Division team championships at the PGA of Southern California Legends Course in Beaumont on May 10. Third-ranked Cerritos Gahr, which took first in the San Gabriel Valley League, will be among the teams participating in the Central Division tournament. The top two teams will advance to the Southern Section finals at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara on May 13.

Boys’ Tennis

Van Nuys will be forced to forfeit three matches this season because the team violated California Interscholastic Federation rules, the City Section tennis advisory committee announced late Thursday.

The Wolves, who finished the season at 5-8 overall and 5-5 in Valley Mission League play before the forfeits, were ruled to have moved a player up or down their lineup more than one spot in consecutive matches on three occasions, which is considered to be stacking talent.

The City Section notified Van Nuys’ athletics director earlier in the week of the allegations. League manager and Monroe boys’ tennis Coach Matt Oliphant reported the violation to the City Section early in the week, according to a league official.

It’s now up to the rules committee, which meets in mid-May, to decide whether any more sanctions will be placed on the program.
