Moderate leftist Marek Belka became Poland’s new prime minister, taking over from unpopular predecessor Leszek Miller, who as expected resigned a day after Poland entered the European Union.

Belka, 52, vowed to restore public trust in the government and capitalize on Poland’s robust economic growth to fight unemployment, which is running at about 20% of the Polish workforce.
