A Sweep for Orange County

Orange County swept the three-game series in the inaugural National Surf League’s California Cup. Mike Todd of Laguna Beach scored 27.5 points to lead Orange County to a 195.25-167.25 victory over San Diego County in the final game Sunday alongside the Huntington Beach Pier.

Organizers and competitors were happy with the opening of the five-week competition, which was held in two-to-four-foot surf. Orange County won by 40 points over Santa Cruz on Friday then held off Ventura County to win by five Saturday.

“Everybody came together as a group,” said Tim Reyes of Huntington Beach, who was Orange County’s high scorer against Santa Cruz.

The beach turnout swelled as the temperatures rose over the weekend, but it was difficult to discern who came for the event. The bleachers behind the team seating areas were only partially full during the four-hour games.

“I was hoping a few more people would show up to cheer us on,” Reyes said.

The event continues Friday with Ventura County hosting the first of three games at C Street.
