Edward V. Ryan Jr., 75; Former Arcadia Superintendent
Edward V. Ryan Jr., 75, former superintendent of schools in Arcadia who also taught school administration at USC, died May 9 in Carlsbad, Calif. The cause of death was liver cancer, said his daughter Jennifer.
Ryan was raised in the Northern California town of Weaverville and in Berkeley. He served in the Navy during World War II, after which he earned a degree in chemistry at UC Berkeley. He took a teaching job at what was then Monrovia-Arcadia-Duarte High School in 1950, and later held administrative positions in the Rialto school district. Meanwhile, he earned his doctorate in education at what is now Claremont Graduate University.

In 1982, he was appointed director of the Institution for Education Administration Research at USC.
