The commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan ordered a “top to bottom” assessment of American prison camps in the country Wednesday, saying he wanted assurances that facilities were adequate and that detainees were being treated in accordance with the Geneva Convention.

Army Lt. Gen. David Barno ordered the probe to ensure that “internationally accepted standards of handling detainees are being met” and that staffing was adequate to the job.
