Spinning reality

In a Colombian rain forest, magical realism and mythology merge with reality as a young man embarks on a surprising journey of self-discovery in Bernardo Solano’s play “Entries,” a free show for family audiences on Friday and Saturday at Walt Disney Concert Hall’s REDCAT space.

Presented by the CalArts Community Arts Partnership/Plaza de la Raza Youth Theater, the colorful musical play involves CalArts faculty, more than two dozen CalArts students and 45 children and teens from Plaza de la Raza in L.A. Oh, and an action-packed battle between warring packs of ants and termites.

“It’s a scene a la the Sharks and the Jets [in ‘West Side Story’], and it’s one of the show’s highlights” said Glenna Avila, director of the CalArts Community Arts Partnership.

In the play, the teenage protagonist returns to his native Colombia to bury the ashes of his father, a mission that turns into a dreamlike adventure.
