Witness Implicates Former President

From Times Wire Reports

A businessman who is at the heart of Kenya’s biggest fraud case implicated former President Daniel Arap Moi in a gold-export scheme that lost the country tens of millions of dollars.

Kamlesh Pattni, a well-connected Kenyan whose fraud trial has dragged on for years, testified at a public inquiry and alleged that Moi agreed to join his company to export nonexistent gold and diamonds.

Pattni is the main defendant in the trial, which centers on compensation the Kenyan Treasury paid to Pattni’s gems firm, Goldenberg International, to subsidize gold and diamond exports from 1991 through 1993 that prosecutors say never took place.
