Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson made sure the Houston Comets’ second game of the WNBA season was nothing like their first.

The two combined for all but 12 of Houston’s points to lead the Comets to a 60-53 victory over Charlotte in the Sting’s season opener Friday night in front of 11,920 in Charlotte, N.C.

Swoopes scored 29 points and Thompson had 19 as the Comets (1-1) bounced back from Thursday’s 64-55 season-opening loss to San Antonio.

Swoopes, limited to eight points on four-for-13 shooting Thursday, scored eight consecutive points in a run that gave Houston a 38-32 lead with 11:38 left. Thompson’s three-point field goal with 8:33 left gave the Comets their largest lead, 47-36.

“We got other people shots and they couldn’t knock them down, so we decided we would go to what we call ‘the home,’ and that was where it was,” Houston Coach Van Chancellor said. “They made big-time plays.”

Indiana 69, New York 67 -- Kristen Rasmussen made two free throws with 10.4 seconds left to give the Fever a five-point lead before the Liberty’s Crystal Robinson made a three-point field goal at the buzzer in front of 8,002 in Indianapolis. The Fever held the Liberty scoreless for nearly five minutes of the second half and used a 10-0 run to take a 52-40 lead with 13:55 left.
