Victory Lies in Gaining Their Hearts and Minds
Re “They’re Unlikely Pals in a Town Full of Pols,” May 21: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s approach to forging a positive relationship with his “prickly” political adversary, state Senate leader John Burton (D-San Francisco), is highly commendable. He seems to have won Burton over with flowers. This is a great thing for California.
Schwarzenegger’s technique should be held as an example to the Bush administration on how to overcome global conflicts. Once upon a time, destroying an enemy meant victory, but today we are so globally interconnected that we cannot destroy another without harming ourselves. Superior military strength will not eliminate enemies. Today, there is only one way to eliminate an enemy: Make him your friend.
