A veteran member of the Orange Unified School District Board of Trustees was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after knocking an 11-year-old boy off his bicycle at an intersection, police said Thursday.

Bill Lewis, 51, was booked on one count of felony driving under the influence and released from Orange County Jail after the 3 p.m. incident Tuesday at Hewes Street and Walnut Avenue in Orange.

Orange police said Lewis, driving a 1997 Honda Accord, had stopped at a stop sign but proceeded before the crosswalk was clear, hitting Fernando Silvereo.

The boy had minor cuts and scrapes and did not have to be taken to a hospital, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they said they smelled alcohol on Lewis’ breath and administered a standard sobriety test, which he failed.
