Hot market leaves some agents cold

A very common misconception in the public is that because the real estate market is sizzling, real estate agents are cashing in big time [“Agents in a Tug of War,” May 23].

The reality is that most agents will earn less in 2004 than in 2002.

The reason is that there are fewer properties for sale in 2004 than in many years and thus there are fewer sales to make. Now there are about four agents for every listing in the San Fernando Valley.

The National Assn. of Realtors published earnings for Realtors in 2003. More than half earned less than $50,000 and only 9% earned more than $100,000. The vast majority are working just as hard as before but selling less. We as agents do not benefit equally from the hot real estate market.
