About 3,000 gallons of fuel flooded a Chevron gas station and spilled into storm drains Monday, forcing the closure of dozens of businesses and resident evacuations, police said.

A worker was pumping gasoline into an underground tank about 10:30 a.m. at North Berkeley Avenue and Harbor Boulevard when for unknown reasons the gas leaked and flooded the streets, said Fullerton Police Lt. Neal Baldwin.

Businesses and homes within a 1,000-foot radius were evacuated as hazardous materials teams investigated the spill. People remained out of the buildings Monday evening.
