Former Governor’s Fraud Trial Set to Begin
Former Gov. Don Siegelman is to go on trial today on Medicaid fraud charges amid an inquiry that has produced guilty pleas from three people connected with his administration.
Siegelman, a Democrat defeated for reelection in 2002, was indicted in May on conspiracy, healthcare fraud and theft charges. Also indicted were former chief of staff Paul Hamrick and physician Phillip Bobo.
Siegelman, Hamrick and Bobo are accused of trying to rig bids on lucrative contracts sought by Bobo’s company in 1999, Siegelman’s first year in office.
