Putting His Millions Where His Mouth Is

Re “George Soros: The ‘God’ Who Carries Around Some Dangerous Demons,” Oct. 4: So glad to see a couple of conservative writers are worried about ultra-rich individuals influencing American politics.

When they’ve finished investigating Soros, perhaps they’ll turn their attention to Richard Mellon Scaife, the Daddy Warbucks of the Republican Party who spent millions funding the Arkansas project back in the 1990s investigating Bill Clinton’s private life in an attempt to overturn the expressed preference of the American electorate.

And how about a piece on Ken Lay, one of George W’s biggest contributors back in the 2000 election? He seems to be a man who doesn’t believe in “following the rules” either.

Re “Financing His Own Anti-Bush Campaign,” Sept. 29: In typical attack-dog Republican-speak, Soros is criticized as being motivated by “self-interest.” But if that were true, the billionaire would be supporting Bush, who has been giving the wealthiest 1% of Americans enormous tax breaks at the expense of the rest of us and our children.

Instead, Soros has been giving money to such organizations as MoveOn.org because he doesn’t like the smell of the leadership in this country.

Bush will not make America or the world safer; he has been creating terrorists faster than he can kill them. Heroin crops in Afghanistan are financing terrorism as never before. “Collateral damage” in Iraq is producing friends and relatives of the victims who are hostile toward the United States -- and thousands of innocent civilians, including children, have been killed so far. Having just returned from Europe, I can confirm that we are alienating the very countries whose cooperation we need.
