Two Stakes Before Cup
Before the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday, Lone Star Park will offer a pair of stakes on today’s card.
Thirteen 3-year-olds were entered in the $250,000 Lone Star Derby at 1 1/16 miles, and Yearly Report heads a field of 10 3-year-old fillies in the $150,000 Stonerside Stakes at seven furlongs.
Pollard’s Vision is the most accomplished member of the Derby lineup. The son of Carson City has won four of 16 and earned more than $925,000 for the Edgewood Farm and trainer Todd Pletcher. The winner of the Illinois Derby earlier this year at Hawthorne, Pollard’s Vision will be ridden by John Velazquez.
Owned by Golden Eagle Farm and trained by Bob Baffert, Yearly Report is coming off a nose loss to Dream Of Summer in the California Cup Matron on Oct. 16 at Santa Anita. First and second in her two previous tries at seven furlongs, the 3-year-old General Meeting filly will be ridden by Jerry Bailey. Her opponents include Angelica Slew, who has won two in a row, five-time winner Questionable Past, Storm Minstrel and the Wayne Lukas-trained Dance Tune.
Race of the day: Stormin Away, who beat $50,000 maidens by nine lengths on Oct. 7, is the 3-1 morning line favorite for today’s $75,000 Pinjara at a mile on the Santa Anita turf. Gary Stevens will ride the 3-year-old Skip Away gelding for owners Joey and Wendy Platts and trainer Jeff Mullins. The Pinjara also attracted Lucky Bid, Veiled Speed, Dover Dere, Great Power, Littlebitofzip and Generalist.
One for the road: Super Tuscan ran into potential star Spanish Chestnut in that one’s splendid debut and can make the third time the charm for trainer Tony Reinstedler in today’s fifth at Keeneland. Jesus Castanon will ride the 2-year-old, who finished five lengths clear of the rest of the field when second Oct. 13, in the $50,000 maiden contest at seven furlongs.
Exotically speaking: A pick three using Bar Leah in the first, Magicjakenjohn, Silver Past and Devoted Lover in the second and Veiled Speed, Dover Dere, Lucky Bid, Generalist and Stormin Away in the third.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 5/77. Money: Previous day/meet total: $20.20/$416.10. Total money bet: $396.
