Senior officials from the U.S., South Korea and Japan met in Tokyo hoping to arrange a fresh round of six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear programs.

South Korea previously hoped for a Sept. 22 date but now is not optimistic that the negotiations -- which bring together the United States, Russia, China, Japan and the two Koreas -- could be held this month.

Revelations of South Korean nuclear experiments could put the talks at risk, and the North may see little incentive to budge before U.S. elections in November, analysts have said.
