Just days after picking up a major union endorsement for his reelection bid, Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn announced Tuesday he has won the backing of the Southern California District Council of Laborers, which represents 23,000 workers in three locals.

One of those locals, Local 300, endorsed Hahn three years ago, but the council as a whole stayed out of that race, said Sergio Rascon, business manager for Local 300.

“He has been a real leader for our city, and we appreciate his work to create more jobs, give more working families access to quality housing and ensure fair and safe workplace conditions,” Rascon said.

The endorsement comes less than a week after Hahn received support from the Service Employees International Union, whose locals include one that represents 10,000 blue-collar city workers.

In backing the mayor, Rascon also cited Hahn’s support for a $9-billion renovation of Los Angeles International Airport, which would provide hundreds of construction jobs.

Union officials promise financing and an army of volunteers to help Hahn’s reelection effort. The SEIU offered similar support when it endorsed Hahn.
