China’s detention of a local researcher for the New York Times in Beijing on suspicion of passing state secrets to foreigners is an internal matter and outsiders should not interfere, the Foreign Ministry said.

Zhao Yan, a former reporter for the magazine China Reform, was suspected of helping to relay the sensitive news that former President Jiang Zemin planned to give up his military post and retire from politics this month, sources familiar with the case said.

The U.S. State Department said it was worried about press freedom in China.
