Time Warner Inc.’s America Online is holding talks with a number of cable-television operators about selling AOL’s Internet service over the cable companies’ high-speed lines.

Such arrangements would replicate America Online’s pact with Road Runner, a fast Web-access service run by New York-based Time Warner’s cable unit.

America Online, based in Dulles, Va., is struggling to retain its 22 million customers as dial-up subscribers defect.
