Presidential Vote Marred by Clashes
From Times Wire Reports
Security forces and opposition supporters in Togo clashed at the end of a tense day of voting for a new president. At least 20 people were hurt, some suffering wounds from machetes and others from gunshots.
The poll pitted Faure Gnassingbe, the 39-year-old son of late president Gnassingbe Eyadema, against Emmanuel Akitani-Bob, 74, backed by six opposition parties. The vote was essentially a referendum on four decades of repressive rule by Eyadema’s northern clan. Results were not expected for several days.
