Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators thronged Mexico City’s central square to protest prosecution of the capital’s mayor, a top contender for president in 2006.
Wearing white masks, protesters in the “March of Silence” filled 12 lanes of the Paseo de La Reforma in columns that stretched for several miles.
Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is in legal limbo after Congress voted to strip him of immunity from prosecution to face charges in an obscure land expropriation case. Under Mexican law, anyone facing criminal charges can’t run for office.
