Drysdale Could Have Two for Money in Inglewood
Trainer Neil Drysdale has two horses capable of winning today’s $100,000 Inglewood Handicap at Hollywood Park.
Red Fort, a 5-year-old Green Desert gelding, was impressive in his first race in this country for owner Walter Swinburn and Drysdale, winning an allowance race against 2004 Santa Anita Derby winner Castledale on March 17 in Arcadia.
Drysdale’s other bullet is King Of Happiness. A 6-year-old owned by Maktoum al Maktoum, King Of Happiness hasn’t been seen since finishing fifth in the Kelso Breeders’ Cup Handicap in October at Belmont Park. Before that, he had won twice in seven starts since arriving in the U.S. after winning twice in 10 starts in Europe.
The rest of the field for the Inglewood, a Grade III at 1 1/16 miles on turf, includes Vangelis, who has been idle for trainer Bobby Frankel since finishing third in the Clement L. Hirsch Handicap in October at Santa Anita; Mister Acpen; Capitano; Inesperado, also trained by Frankel; Fail Me Not, and Just Wonder, who hasn’t won since taking the 2003 Cinema Breeders’ Cup Handicap for trainer Laura de Seroux.
Race of the day: Supah Blitz, who won the Tokyo City Handicap on April 2 at Santa Anita, is the one to beat in today’s $300,000 Texas Mile at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. Owned by a partnership and trained by Doug O’Neill, Supah Blitz, who was second to Kela in this Grade III a year ago, will be ridden by Victor Espinoza. Yessirgeneralsir, third in the 2004 Mile; Toratora, Snorter, High Strike Zone and Twilight Road complete the field.
One for the road: Don’t Get Mad shortens up for trainer Ron Ellis and returns to the scene of both of his victories in today’s $100,000 Derby Trial at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old Stephen Got Even colt has won two of three races around one turn and should get a quick pace to chase under new rider Gary Stevens in the one-mile race.
Exotically speaking: A pick three using Razik in the second, Wathab, Spencer’s Magic and Nikinipo in the third, and La Tormenta, Jewel’s Tizzy, Definite Maybe and Miss Whim Z in the fourth.
Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 2/14. Money: Previous day/meet total: $12.40/$85.80. Total money bet: $88.
