Margaret Kilgallen: In the Sweet Bye & Bye: An installation of paintings, sculptures and drawings travels back in time to a place on the outskirts of town where surfers, fiddlers and cooks go about their business as if nothing could stop them. Most exude a don’t-mess-
with-me determination: brows furrowed, eyes narrowed, cheeks creased and mouths tightly shut. Most are women. None is rich. And every one looks as if she couldn’t care less about the maddeningly rapid pace of life. The late Bay Area artist’s 300 works cut through tired nostalgia with a sobering realism, welcoming visitors to a world that is scruffy, endearing and strong.
