A Los Angeles career, a New York state of mind

HE’S an actor from New York, but he lives in Los Angeles, costarring in a television series filmed mainly in L.A. but called “CSI: NY.” That’s Carmine Giovinazzo, who still walks the streets of Southern California in search of Brooklyn-style pizza.

Single and 32, he’s appeared in films such as “Black Hawk Down” while doing television work, including all three “CSI” series. But with taping for “NY’s” second season winding down, he’ll soon have more time to devote to his own movie script. “It’s about a New York kid who realizes that where he grew up is not where he belongs,” he says.

Maybe the kid could give L.A. a try.

They both have sand

I’ve been here since 1997, but I really don’t know Malibu from Venice, so I might like to go by the ocean on a Friday night and hang out.

I’d then head to Mandarette on Beverly, where I like the lemon chicken and the lettuce cup, which has minced chicken and lettuce with a special sauce. I’m a simple man -- I only eat to refuel, so that’s about as fancy it gets.

After that, I’d go see Lou Reed at a live show. He’s a real storyteller with his songs.

On Saturday morning I’d go to this tiny place in Hollywood called the Juice Fountain. It’s about the size of a wealthy man’s bathroom. I’m not a coffee guy because I can’t do caffeine, so I go for juices and decaf tea.

I’d also play some golf with my friend Sammy up in Griffith Park. I’ve recently become addicted, which is funny because when I was growing up, I never thought golf was something I’d do.

We started at this little par three out in the Valley, but then my competitive edge took over and I said, “OK, now let’s see what the real game is about,” and we moved onto big courses. It’s great -- I haven’t had something like it in my life since playing baseball in college.

After that, I’d go by the YMCA and take a steam, then to Albano’s for pizza. It has a real New York-Staten Island kind of street-corner feel to it. You can go up, order a couple of slices and you’re on your way in two minutes. So many places out here, they only have pan pizza, they don’t have it by the slice, they want to put pineapple, oranges and grapes on it, then it takes 20 minutes to make. They’d go out of business in two days in New York.

A little ball

I’d love to go out to the ballpark and see the Dodgers and Mets, or the Dodgers and Yankees if they had interleague play. I do charity work for the Dodgers, their programs for inner-city kids, and I like to go out there when I can.

I might also stop off at the Hotel Cafe, a little storefront place on Cahuenga. I’d get together a drummer and my acoustic guitar and play some of my songs. Music, painting and acting are what fulfill me.

And morning eggs

On Sunday morning I’d just go down on 3rd Street and treat myself to eggs Benedict. Then maybe I’d take a bike ride. I don’t have a bike yet, but I keep telling myself I’ll buy one and ride all around the Hollywood Hills.

Then I’d grab something to eat at home and go work out at the Y, or head over to the batting cages for a while and then to a park to watch the kids play baseball. Maybe they’d even let me play.
