Jason Swanson threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, one more than he had in the regular season, and Kansas defeated Houston, 42-13, Friday night in the Fort Worth Bowl.

Houston (6-6), with record-setting quarterback Kevin Kolb, entered as the team touted for its high-powered offense. Instead, the Jayhawks (7-5) had a season-high 538 yards and won for the fourth time in five games -- all since Swanson became the starter.

“We knew we’d have an opportunity to throw big on them,” Swanson said. “We just had to come out and do it.”

Toby Neinas, a son of sports consultant Chuck Neinas, has been hired as an assistant coach at San Diego State.

The Aztecs haven’t specified which position Neinas will coach, but he has experience on both sides of the ball during 14 seasons as an assistant, including as linebackers coach at Temple the last two seasons. He was at Temple for four years.

Chuck Neinas was used by San Diego State during the searches that landed Coach Chuck Long and Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel. Schemmel said there was no connection in the hiring of Toby Neinas and the use of his father as a headhunter in the two searches.
