Stakes Are Huge at Calder
Before Gulfstream Park kicks off its meet Monday, Calder will offer an all-stakes pick four today.
Called Grand Slam III, the pick four with a $250,000 guaranteed pool features the $100,000 Tropical Park Derby, $100,000 Tropical Park Oaks, $100,000 Stage Door Betty and $50,000 Happy New Year.
Jerry Bailey, who again will ride regularly at Gulfstream, has mounts in the Derby and Stage Door Betty. He will be aboard Medigating for trainer Niall O’Callaghan in the Derby, a Grade III at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, and Personal Legend for trainer Bobby Frankel in the Stage Door Betty at 1 1/16 miles.
Personal Legend, a 5-year-old Awesome Again mare, is coming off her first main track win, a half-length decision over Roar Emotion in the Turnback The Alarm Handicap on Nov. 6 at Aqueduct.
A gray son of the French sire Dolphin Street, Medigating won two of eight in Europe and will be making his first start in this country.
Brazilian, Dynamite Lass and Dansetta Light head the field in the Oaks. Running Bobcats, Elke and Glittering Tax are among the contenders in the Happy New Year.
Race of the day: Truly A Judge, who has won two in a row for trainer Dave Bernstein, is among 10 entrants for today’s $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap at Santa Anita. The Grade II is scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on the turf, but could very well be moved to the main track because of the recent heavy rain. It is part of a pick six with a carry-over of $107,803.
One for the road: Amazing Buy adds Lasix in her second start and can break her maiden in today’s fourth at Aqueduct. Norberto Arroyo Jr. will ride the 3-year-old daughter of High Yield in the six-furlong race. The connections have been hot lately and maidens from the stable tend to improve the second time out. Amazing Buy finished third in her debut on Dec. 12.
Exotically speaking: A pick three using Gray Black N White in the third, Latin Devil, Rubiano’s Wish and Soupy in the fourth and Zoolu Nights, Moveinday, Court Shenanigans, Spend Spend Spend and Alferrari in the fifth.
Winners: Previous day/meet total: 4/16. Money: Previous day/meet total: $23.80/$96. Total money bet: $86.
