The fluidity of inspiration
In 1956, painter Sam Francis was called “the hottest American painter in Paris” by Time magazine. He was also featured in the “12 Americans” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which celebrated the most influential works in modern American paintings of that year. “Works on Paper and Important Prints 1957-1989” displays Francis’ creations of free, fluid shapes, empty spaces on canvases, and abstract works that reflected his interest in the Japanese aesthetic.
