A Paycheck Linked to Redistricting
Re “Taking ‘Modern Art’ Out of California’s Political Map,” Commentary, Jan. 26: As someone who lives in an area that is rapidly trending Democratic but who is “represented” by three of the worst ultraconservative state Senate, Assembly and congressional officials imaginable, I welcome the proposal to redraw the legislative lines as soon as possible. Garry South has convinced me that I have nothing to lose and everything to gain by redistricting.
However, as a point of disclosure, South probably should have mentioned that political consultants (like him) are probably losing up to half of their business without competitive general elections. I suspect that noncompetitive state Legislature and congressional elections have created a significant financial hardship for political consultants in both parties.
