Padres Acquire Quantrill From Yankees

The San Diego Padres acquired Paul Quantrill from the New York Yankees on Saturday for Darrell May and Tim Redding in a trade of struggling pitchers.

Quantrill was 1-0 with a 6.75 earned-run-average in 22 games this season.

The Yankees, who also received an undisclosed amount of cash from the Padres, designated Quantrill for assignment on Thursday.

May, a left-hander, was 1-3 with a 5.61 ERA.

Redding, a right-hander, was 0-5 with a 9.10 ERA for the Padres.

John Franco was designated for assignment by the Houston Astros, removing him from the 40-man roster and giving them 10 days to decide what to do with the National League’s career leader in saves.

Franco, a 44-year-old left-hander, was 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in 31 games. He is second behind Lee Smith on the career list with 424 saves.

The New York Mets activated infielder Miguel Cairo from the 15-day disabled list. He had been sidelined since June 15 because of a strained left hamstring. To make room on the roster, the Mets optioned outfielder Victor Diaz to triple-A Norfolk.... The Tampa Bay Devil Rays put infielder Eric Munson, who has bruised ribs, on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of outfielder Chris Singleton from triple-A Durham.... The Boston Red Sox put reliever Matt Mantei, who has a sprained left ankle, on the 15-day disabled list.
