Willis Stops Mets for His 13th Win

Dontrelle Willis became the National League’s first 13-game winner, pitching a three-hitter to lead the Florida Marlins over the New York Mets, 3-0, Sunday at Shea Stadium.

Willis (13-3) allowed only two baserunners after the first inning and threw his major league-leading fourth shutout of the season in his 17th start.

Willis struck out seven and walked one in his league-leading fifth complete game, lowering his earned-run average to 1.89.

Houston 9, Cincinnati 0 -- Roger Clemens threw seven shutout innings at Cincinnati and the Astros sent the Reds to their worst first-half record in 71 years. Clemens (7-3) gave up four hits in lowering his major league-leading ERA to 1.41. The Reds are 31-50, their worst record after 81 games since the 1934 club was 27-54 on its way to finishing 52-99.

San Diego 9, San Francisco 6 -- Khalil Greene drove in four runs and Brian Giles had three RBIs for the Padres, who roughed up Jason Schmidt at San Diego. Schmidt (6-4) had won three consecutive starts, in which he had given up only three earned runs in 22 innings. But he gave up four earned runs during a five-run third and left after the fourth.

Washington 5, Chicago 4 -- Brian Schneider hit a homer in the 12th inning and the Nationals overcame Chad Cordero’s first blown save in more than two months to complete a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field. The Nationals have won six in a row.

Pittsburgh 11, Milwaukee 10 -- Matt Lawton broke an eighth-inning tie by scoring on a wild pitch and the Pirates rallied from a six-run deficit to win at Milwaukee. Freddy Sanchez had three hits, including a homer, and drove in two runs for the Pirates, who used their biggest comeback of the season to end a five-game losing streak.

St. Louis 5, Colorado 4 -- Abraham Nunez singled in the winning run in the ninth inning, and the Cardinals denied the Rockies their first road series win of the season. The Rockies have lost 13 consecutive road series, 16 in a row dating to last September.

Atlanta 4, Philadelphia 3 -- Ryan Langerhans hit a leadoff triple off Billy Wagner (1-1) in the top of the ninth inning and scored the tiebreaking run on Wilson Betemit’s sacrifice fly to shallow center, beating the throw from Kenny Lofton.
